Dear friends of the seminary,

The new academic year at Mater Dei Seminary began on September 8, the feast of the Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Once again, the seminary has been blessed with a strong enrollment, with a total of nineteen men in formation this year, including sixteen seminarians beginning or continuing their studies for the holy priesthood and three deacons preparing for ordination.

The seminarians this year come from a variety of countries and backgrounds. In addition to those from the United States, the student body includes seminarians from Italy, Colombia, Turkey, Portugal, Brazil, and Canada. This international character of the seminary is a reminder of the truly Catholic nature of the Church and of the need for well-trained priests throughout the world.

A New Member of the Seminary Faculty

We are also pleased to welcome a new member to the seminary staff, Fr. Lucas Oliveira. Having recently been ordained to the holy priesthood, Fr. Oliveira now joins the faculty and will be teaching Latin and Sacred Liturgy.

His addition to the staff will be a great benefit to the seminarians, particularly in their liturgical formation and in the study of the language of the Church.

Upcoming Priestly Ordinations — September 29

The beginning of the school year also comes during an especially important month for the seminary. On September 29, three of our deacons—Rev. Mr. Kyle St. Aubin, Rev. Mr. Thomas Netzel, and Rev. Mr. Richard Lauricella—are scheduled to be ordained to the holy priesthood at Mount St. Michael’s in Spokane, Washington.

Their ordinations will mark the culmination of many years of prayer, study, and formation in preparation for the sacred ministry.

As another academic year begins, we ask the faithful to remember all of our seminarians in their prayers, and especially those preparing for ordination. We also ask those who are able to consider supporting Mater Dei Seminary with a financial contribution. The formation of future priests requires considerable material support, and every donation helps provide for the education and daily needs of the men preparing to serve the Church.
May Our Lady, Queen of the Clergy, watch over them and obtain for them the graces necessary to persevere in their vocation and one day become holy and zealous priests. God bless you!
